DESIGNER BIO/ BACKGROUND

Mission statement: Using multiple therapeutic modalities, we increase self-esteem in and empower women who have been affected by cancer. We create an experiential and transformative adventure that taps into each woman's Hidden Warrior.

Story behind the Hidden Warriors Project (as told by Founder, Marlene Sarli): A few years ago, as I was moving through a difficult time in my life, I had access to a closet full of headdresses that belonged to my aunt. In the process of trying a few on, I noticed my posture, body language and attitude change from hopeless to powerful.

Being framed in this context was unlike anything I'd experienced in my life. I felt unbelievably strong, powerful, beautiful, confident and unstoppable. It awakened a dormant energy in me that I was able to use as fuel to move forward. Years later, I now understand the importance of posture and power posing and what it does to our brain chemistry. It literally does heal us, as studied by many social psychologists, and wearing certain headdresses gently forces us to hold these power poses. This is just one of the simple but profound benefits of wearing these pieces. I was stunned at how beneficial and therapeutic this experience was for me.

Fast forward to 2013 when my mother, the strongest and most incredible woman I have ever known, was diagnosed with breast cancer. I felt compelled to come up with ideas to help her get through her treatments and strengthen and empower her to fight for her life. I love this woman more than anything or anyone in this world and would do anything for her. I came to understand that ANY positive experience, no matter how small, can be a healing and strengthening force for anyone who has been weakened by cancer or any other trauma. And the Hidden Warriors Project was born.

The Goal: Working cooperatively with avant-garde makeup artists, stylists, costume creators, yoga and meditation instructors, occupational therapists, and other creative volunteers and organizations, we provide free "warrior makeovers" to women who have been affected by cancer. These makeover experiences are designed to increase self-esteem and confidence, reduce stress, and empower women in the fight for their lives.

Our team uses various headdresses and makeup to release each woman’s Hidden Warrior power. We photograph and document the process of transforming their mood and body language. These photographs are then presented at a series of gallery exhibitions, published in book form and ultimately made into a short documentary. Our goal is world-wide service, providing these Warrior Makeover Workshops to anyone experiencing a lack of power. This therapy has the potential to benefit many communities, including victims of domestic violence, children in foster care, people suffering with low self-esteem, anxiety and/or depression, etc. It is limitless!

Soon after launching the Hidden Warriors Project on October 12, 2014, we were featured in the November issue of Avant Garde Magazine November 2014 Los Angeles, CA, with an 8 page spread and we were nominated to premiere a HWP “warrior makeover” workshop at the Orange County Fashion Week (CA) on the glass catwalk! We have also joined forces with several collaborators from different parts of the country as well as overseas. We are very excited to witness how fast this dream has advanced into reality.

We seek to inspire more collaborators to join us in this one of a kind project. Our vision is for everyone involved in this project to join forces and WIN, from the "Warrior" and photographer, to the funders and the creatives who are making this project come to life. —EVERYONE IS INTEGRAL and equally valued as a powerful piece of this project! Let's GO!
